These tannins are responsibly sourced from the wood, bark, leaves, fruits, and roots of specific trees and shrubs, including chestnut, mimosa, tara, and quebracho.

Historically, this method involves suspending hides in a series of vats or tanks, beginning with a low concentration of tannins and gradually moving to higher concentrations. This slow, methodical process allows the tannins to properly penetrate and fix to the hide, taking anywhere from twenty to thirty days to complete. The resulting material is characteristically dense, heavy, and firm. It typically possesses a distinctive light brown color and an authentic aesthetic that ages beautifully over time. Because of its exceptional ability to retain its shape, vegetable-tanned leather is highly favored for structured, sturdy items like shoe soles, belts, heavy handbags, and saddlery.
