The Integrity of Materials: Understanding Upcycled and Bonded Leather

At Kyenn House, our dedication to exceptional craftsmanship involves a deep respect for the natural materials we use. As we mindfully look for ways to lower consumption, we embrace the ethos of buying better and investing for the future. This commitment naturally leads to questions about sustainable materials, particularly the distinct characteristics of upcycled leather and bonded leather.

The Purposeful Path of Upcycled Leather

The creation of upcycled leather involves taking existing materials and elevating them into new, durable goods. In our Kyenn Lite, or Revive, collection, we utilize upcycled industrial off-cut leather to offer versatile and accessible luxury. Leather trimmings from the manufacturing process can be thoughtfully repurposed and given new life, allowing us to actively participate in a more circular economy. By transforming these high-quality off-cuts into beautifully crafted items, we support a society that needs to consume less and reuse more. Every piece in our Revive line is hand finished and machine sewn to maintain the uncompromising quality and unmistakable DNA of Kyenn House.

The Composition of Bonded Leather

Bonded leather, sometimes known as leather board, represents a different manufacturing approach. This material is produced using leather dust, clippings, and shavings that are bonded together with a base substance, which is usually synthetic. International standards provide clear guidelines on this process: if a tanned hide or skin is mechanically or chemically disintegrated into fibrous particles, small pieces, or powders, and then formed into sheets with or without a binding agent, those resulting forms are categorized as a separate composite material
